THE BUY LOCAL INITIATIVE         Main Street Covington encourages citizens to invest in our local economy by not only by spending their dollars in downtown Covington but in all businesses in Newton County. By spending locally citizens invest in the infrastructure of their county. With the unprecedented growth that is taking place it is vital that we optimize every opportunity to insure that our sales tax dollars stay local and benefit our community. Our community-based businesses are an integral part of community character – they employ the services of other local businesses, carry locally made goods, often serve as community hubs, and more. They're where the locals go. They're owned by our friends and neighbors.     Local businesses are integral to healthy neighborhoods and strong city centers. They are human-scaled, impose less distress on the environment, and help create a distinct local identity. Independent businesses provide goods and services that meet the unique needs of their communities and are an integral part of creating community character. We hold close the notion of distinctive business with local character but we often forget their survival depends on patronage. Typically local business owners have invested much of their life-savings in their business and have a natural interest in the long-term health of the community. Each time we spend a dollar it would do us well to weigh the value of our choices, not solely to ourselves immediately, but also for the future we want in our own hometown.
